Happy Father’s Day to all the dads, father figures, and people who teach us life lessons. My dad taught me a lot and I recognize him in a big part of who I am. Thanks for all the wisdom, deep sentimentality over music and history, and a powerful sense of nostalgia. I’ll never forget “lefty loosey, righty tighty.” Our parents and people we love are never here forever. Hold them close.

Some Instagram vs reality snippets from our time in Cyprus.

We visited Cyprus without knowing much about it and were even scoping it out as a potential place to live someday. It’s a beautiful island. Gorgeous blue water and some dramatic coastline features. The historic centers of the cities are interesting and appealing. But we immediately knew it wasn’t our favorite place. The vibes just didn’t appeal to me, granted our initial impression was touristy beach towns. The smaller villages had charm. And the more we saw, the more it grew on us. But of all the places I’ve been, I’d put Cyprus low on the list of places I would consider revisiting.

This ended up being our 2nd most expensive country

This ended up being our 2nd most expensive country (on a per day basis) during 3 months of traveling last fall. France was the most. I think overall Cyprus was relatively affordable. Our first hotel included 2 meals (breakfast and dinner). I haven’t considered such a stay ever really, but when I did the math, it ended up saving a lot of money not having to eat out.

Overall Cyprus was not my favorite country. We’d wanted to visit thinking maybe it would be a place we’d consider living someday but the vibe wasn’t right. At least now we know. But I will say it grew on me as we explored more of it. Have you ever visited a country that turned out quite different than you expected?

Technically I’d argue almost everywhere is best in

Technically I’d argue almost everywhere is best in shoulder season but some places you want to see with amazing weather, for certain seasons and holidays, etc. and there’s no getting around that.

Italy in general is amazing in May and early June before the peak summer when tourism is highest. Albania was equally lovely at that time of year.

Greece can be so busy in the summer but we found October to be less crowded, with gorgeous weather and the ocean swimmable. We were able to get a month long apartment for a reasonable price because high season was mostly over.

We visited Türkiye in November and the weather was amazing, prices and availability for hotels were excellent, and you could still swim in the ocean. The price for a hot air balloon ride in Cappadocia was very reasonable and we had many sites to ourselves.

What are some places you could argue are unmissable in peak tourism season instead?

🇬🇪 Georgia is a country of so much! Mountains incredible history, great food, welcoming people, and so much more. We absolutely loved it and can’t wait to return.

Spend at least 3 days in Tbilisi, at least a couple days in the Caucasus mountains, and a day or two in the wine region of Sighnaghi!

Not thrilled to need annual colonoscopies but I am thrilled to not be dead from colon cancer.

Memorial Hospital in Istanbul is world class, beautiful, and the experience was incredible. The staff, the medical professionals, down to having our own personal assistant and translator was incredible.

My particular package would’ve been $5,500 and was the most expensive, in depth option. My boyfriend got a package that was closer to $1,500 but still quite in depth.

This 19th century city is the second largest city

This 19th century city is the second largest city in the country and is known for being the cultural capital of Armenia. It was devastated by an earthquake in 1988, killing thousands and destroying most of the city. They are still in the process of rebuilding.

Gyumri, Armenia is a cultural hub for the arts, a major industrial center, and a symbol of resilience. The unique black architecture features local volcanic stone abundant in the region making the city look gothic.

At one point Gyumri was the largest city in Armenia until the capital shifted to Yerevan.

It’s a really unique small city worth a visit. A walking tour is a must to learn about the history. There are lots of good restaurants in the city to try traditional Armenian foods and more!
